A Journey through Ignatian Places: A Travelogue - Sooraj Dominic

Paris, France: A Scholarly Sojourn
As I embarked on my journey through Ignatian places, my first stop was Paris, a city of scholarly pursuits and cultural marvels. Arriving in the City of Lights for my theological studies was a thrilling beginning to this pilgrimage of faith and discovery.
Paris welcomed me with its enchanting streets, bustling cafes, and the timeless elegance of its architecture.

My days in Paris were filled with immersion in the French language and the vibrant academic life of the city. The cobblestone streets of the Latin Quarter echoed with the footsteps of generations of scholars, and I found myself drawn to its intellectual energy.

The Collège de Montaigu, where Ignatius first pursued ascetic studies, resonated with a sense of history and intellectual rigor. Moving on to the Collège Sainte-Barbe, where Ignatius studied for his master's degree, I felt a profound connection to his journey of intellectual and spiritual growth.

The halls of Sainte-Barbe seemed to whisper stories of dedication and enlightenment, inspiring me to delve deeper into my own studies and reflections. Montmartre: A Sacred Encounter One of the most poignant moments of my journey occurred on the sacred hill of Montmartre. On the 15th of August, 1534, in the chapel of the Church of Saint Peter, Ignatius and his companions solemnly vowed to dedicate their lives to God.

Standing in the shadow of this historic chapel, I felt the weight of history and the power of faith that permeated this sacred space. Barcelona to Montserrat: A Pilgrimage of Faith Leaving behind the streets of Paris, I journeyed to Barcelona, where the next chapter of my pilgrimage unfolded. From the bustling city, I ventured to the serene mountains of Montserrat, a place of spiritual significance where Ignatius found solace and inspiration.

As I stood before the awe-inspiring Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, nestled amidst the rugged peaks, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The Black Madonna, revered by pilgrims for centuries, seemed to watch over us with a silent grace, embodying the enduring presence of divine love. Manresa: The Cave of Spiritual Awakening My pilgrimage led me to Manresa, where Ignatius experienced profound spiritual insights and penned the Spiritual Exercises, a masterpiece of Christian spirituality.

Exploring the winding streets of this ancient town, I made my way to the Cave of Saint Ignatius, a place of prayer and reflection where Ignatius spent months in profound communion with God. As I entered the dimly lit cave, I could sense the palpable presence of the divine, enveloping me in a profound sense of awe and reverence. Pamplona to Javier: Tracing Ignatius' Footsteps Continuing my journey, I traced Ignatius' footsteps to Pamplona, where he was wounded in battle and experienced a profound spiritual awakening.

The rugged beauty of the Navarre countryside unfolded before me as I made my way to Javier, a quaint town steeped in history and tradition. Visiting the Castle of Xavier and the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, I marveled at the enduring legacy of St. Francis Xavier, whose life continues to inspire countless souls across the centuries. San Sebastian to Loyola: A Sanctuary of Faith In San Sebastian, a bustling port city steeped in Basque culture, I paused to savor the sights and sounds of this vibrant coastal enclave.

From there, I made my way to the Sanctuary of Loyola, a place of pilgrimage and prayer where the spirit of Ignatius resides. Surrounded by the serene beauty of the Basque countryside, I explored the ornate edifices of the sanctuary, each one a testament to the enduring legacy of Ignatian spirituality.

Standing before the birthplace of Ignatius, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of a saint.

Bilbao and Beyond: Reflections on the Journey As my journey drew to a close, I made my way to Bilbao, where I boarded a night train back to Paris. Reflecting on my travels through Ignatian places, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to immerse myself in the rich tapestry of history, faith, and culture that defines the Ignatian legacy.

Each place I visited offered a unique glimpse into the life and teachings of St. Ignatius, inspiring me to deepen my own spiritual journey and live more fully in the service of others. As I returned to Paris, my heart was filled with a newfound sense of purpose and passion. My journey through Ignatian places had left an indelible mark on my soul, reminding me of the power of faith, the importance of humility, and the transformative grace of God's love. And as I walked the streets of Paris once more, I carried with me the echoes of Ignatius' words, guiding me on the path of greater wisdom, compassion, and inner peace.

Paris to Compostela : A Pilgrimage of Reflection - Sooraj Dominic

Our journey began on a balmy morning at the iconic Gare Montparnasse in Paris.  Alongside me were my Jesuit companions, Jack Jermanos and Shaddy, both dear friends from Centre Sevre, Faculté de Jésuits de Paris. As we settled into our seats aboard the train, excitement mingled with a hint of nostalgia for the memories we were leaving behind. The train ride from Paris to Bayonne stretched for six hours and thirty minutes, a leisurely passage through the French countryside. Rolling hills, quaint villages, and fields of sunflowers painted a picturesque scene outside our windows. Conversations flowed freely as we reminisced about our time in Paris, sharing laughter and contemplation in equal measure.
