Exploring Brussels and Beyond- Sooraj Dominic

My journey to Brussels, the heart of Europe, commenced from the bustling streets of Paris. Leaving behind the iconic landmarks of the City of Light, I embarked on the sleek Thalys train, my vessel for traversing the picturesque landscapes that connect France to Belgium. As the train glided through the verdant countryside, anticipation swirled within me, for I was about to embark on a month-long exploration as part of the European Jesuits in Formation (EJIF).

 Arrival in Brussels

Arriving in Brussels, a city steeped in history and brimming with contemporary vibrance, I felt an immediate sense of enchantment. After settling into my accommodation at Heverly Hills, nestled near the esteemed University of Leuven, I eagerly set out to immerse myself in the eclectic tapestry of Brussels.

 Cultural Odyssey

In the days that followed, I embarked on a cultural odyssey, delving into the rich heritage and vibrant pulse of Brussels. The city's array of museums offered a window into its storied past, from the magnificent Royal Museums of Fine Arts to the whimsical Comic Strip Center, celebrating Belgium's illustrious comic art tradition.

Venturing beyond the confines of traditional art, I found myself drawn to the pulsating rhythm of European politics at the European Parliament and the solemn majesty of NATO headquarters, where global diplomacy unfolds against a backdrop of architectural splendor.

 Spiritual Sojourn

As a student of theology, I felt compelled to explore the spiritual soul of Brussels. The grandeur of its cathedrals, such as the awe-inspiring Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, resonated with a timeless reverence, while the serene sanctuaries offered moments of quiet reflection amidst the city's bustling streets.

Engaging with the vibrant Jesuit community in Brussels, I found solace and inspiration in the shared pursuit of faith and learning. Through dialogue and fellowship, I deepened my understanding of the Jesuit mission in the heart of Europe, forging connections that transcended borders and cultures.

 Gastronomic Delights

No exploration of Brussels would be complete without indulging in its culinary treasures. With a reputation as the capital of chocolate and beer, the city tantalized my taste buds with its decadent offerings.

From artisanal chocolatiers crafting exquisite pralines to cozy cafés serving velvety hot chocolate, every bite was a symphony of flavors, a testament to Belgium's mastery of the cocoa bean.

Equally enticing was the world of Belgian beer, where centuries-old brewing traditions intersect with contemporary innovation. From the Trappist ales of Westmalle Abbey to the lively atmosphere of local pubs, each sip revealed a nuanced palette of tastes and aromas, a celebration of Belgium's brewing heritage.

Farewell to Brussels

As my time in Brussels drew to  a close, I found myself reluctant to bid farewell to this captivating city. From its storied landmarks to its warm-hearted inhabitants, Brussels had left an indelible mark on my soul, a testament to the enduring allure of exploration and discovery.

As I boarded the Thalys train once more, bound for Paris and onward to new horizons, I carried with me not only memories of Brussels but also a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world and the transformative power of travel.

Epilogue: Reflections

Reflecting on my journey through Brussels as part of the European Jesuits in Formation, I am reminded of the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order: "Go forth and set the world on fire." In Brussels, amidst its storied streets and vibrant communities, I found inspiration to ignite the flames of curiosity, compassion, and faith, journeying onward with renewed purpose and zeal.

Awakening in the Hills: My Transformative Journey at Bodhi Zendo, Kodaikanal - Sooraj D

Bodhi Zendo, nestled in the serene Perumalmalai near Kodaikanal, stands as a unique beacon of Zen meditation in South India. Founded in 1996 by Fr. AMA Samy, the first Indian Zen master and a Jesuit priest, the center represents a remarkable confluence of spiritual traditions. Fr. AMA Samy's journey to establishing Bodhi Zendo was deeply shaped by his life experiences and spiritual quests. His search for spiritual depth led him to Hindu ashrams, Buddhist meditation centers, and eventually to Japan, where he trained under Yamada Ko-Un Roshi of the Sanbo Kyodan school of Zen Buddhism. In 1982, he was authorized to teach Zen, blending elements from Soto and Rinzai traditions along with influences from Christianity and other religions, thereby creating a distinctive teaching method that reflects both his Indian heritage and Zen training. Bodhi Zendo literally means "Awakening Hall" and functions as a Sangha—a community of practitioners—open to all, regardless of religious bac...

A Spiritual Haven in the Hills: Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur- Sooraj D

Nestled in the breathtaking Palni Hills of Kodaikanal, Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur is much more than a Jesuit formation house—it is a living testament to a rich legacy of faith, ecological stewardship, educational dedication, and spiritual renewal. This remarkable institution’s origins and ongoing mission are rooted in the vision and efforts of early Jesuit missionaries, particularly Fr. Saint-Cyr, whose pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what has become a beacon of Ignatian spirituality and holistic formation. The Genesis: Fr. Saint-Cyr and the Birth of a Vision The story of Sacred Heart College begins in the mid-19th century with one man’s profound encounter with the Kodaikanal plateau. In 1852, while on a pastoral visit to Periakulam as a missionary responsible for the Dindigul, Palni, and Kumbam valleys, Fr. Saint-Cyr happened upon the steep rise of the Kodai plateau. Intrigued and inspired, he climbed through dense jungle to the plateau’s summit and immediately envisi...

The Pilgrimage of Trust - Taizé Community Gathering in Strasbourg In the heart of Europe, amidst the picturesque beauty of Strasbourg, France, lies a sacred gathering ground for thousands of young Christians from across the continent. The 36th annual meeting of the Taizé Community, aptly named the "Pilgrimage of Trust," was a profound journey of spiritual enrichment and communal solidarity.
