Nestled in the heart of Belgium, Bruges is a city that seems to have emerged straight from the pages of a fairytale. Its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and tranquil canals make it a destination unlike any other. Join me on a journey as I recount my enchanting visit to this picturesque city.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

As my train rolled into the Bruges station, I was immediately captivated by the city's charm. Stepping out onto the platform, I was greeted by the sight of historic buildings and the sound of church bells echoing through the air. After checking into my hotel, I wasted no time in setting out to explore.

My first stop was the Markt, the bustling central square of Bruges. Here, surrounded by colorful facades and lively cafes, I marveled at the towering Belfry of Bruges, its spire reaching towards the sky. I climbed the narrow staircase to the top, where I was rewarded with panoramic views of the city below.

Next, I wandered through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, admiring the well-preserved medieval architecture at every turn. The Basilica of the Holy Blood, with its richly decorated interior, and the serene Beguinage were particular highlights.

As evening fell, I made my way to the Dijver Canal, where I boarded a boat for a sunset cruise. Drifting along the waterways, I watched as the city was bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, its reflection shimmering on the surface of the canals. It was a magical end to my first day in Bruges.

Day 2: Art and History

Eager to delve deeper into Bruges' rich cultural heritage, I began my second day with a visit to the Groeningemuseum. Here, I immersed myself in the works of the Flemish Primitives, marveling at masterpieces by artists such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. The intricate details and vibrant colors of these paintings brought the past to life before my eyes.

Afterwards, I strolled through the tranquil courtyard of the Old St. John's Hospital, pausing to admire the stunning architecture and serene atmosphere. I then made my way to the Memling Museum, housed within the hospital's walls, where I gained further insight into the life and work of the renowned artist.

In the afternoon, I embarked on a guided walking tour of Bruges' historic sites. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, I learned about the city's fascinating history, from its medieval origins to its heyday as a thriving trading port. Highlights of the tour included the Gothic splendor of the Church of Our Lady and the serene tranquility of the Minnewater Park.

Day 3: Culinary Delights and Hidden Gems

On my final day in Bruges, I set out to explore some of the city's culinary delights. I began with a visit to the bustling Markt, where I indulged in a traditional Belgian breakfast of fresh pastries and strong coffee at a local cafe. Energized and ready for adventure, I then set off to discover some of Bruges' hidden culinary gems.

My first stop was the Chocolate Line, a renowned chocolate shop where I sampled an array of decadent treats, each more delicious than the last. From creamy pralines to rich truffles, it was a chocolate lover's paradise.

Next, I ventured off the beaten path to explore the charming neighborhood of Sint-Anna, where I stumbled upon a quaint bakery tucked away down a picturesque alleyway. Here, I savored a warm waffle topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, a true taste of Belgian indulgence.

As the afternoon sun began to wane, I made my way to the tranquil courtyard of the Beguinage, where I spent my final hours in Bruges reflecting on the beauty and serenity of this enchanting city. As I watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I knew that my time in Bruges would stay with me forever.

Conclusion:

My visit to Bruges was a journey through time and beauty, a chance to immerse myself in the rich history and culture of this enchanting city. From its medieval architecture to its culinary delights, Bruges captured my heart in a way that few places ever have. As I boarded the train back to reality, I knew that I would carry the memories of my time in Bruges with me always, a reminder of the magic that awaits those who dare to explore its streets.

Awakening in the Hills: My Transformative Journey at Bodhi Zendo, Kodaikanal - Sooraj D

Bodhi Zendo, nestled in the serene Perumalmalai near Kodaikanal, stands as a unique beacon of Zen meditation in South India. Founded in 1996 by Fr. AMA Samy, the first Indian Zen master and a Jesuit priest, the center represents a remarkable confluence of spiritual traditions. Fr. AMA Samy's journey to establishing Bodhi Zendo was deeply shaped by his life experiences and spiritual quests. His search for spiritual depth led him to Hindu ashrams, Buddhist meditation centers, and eventually to Japan, where he trained under Yamada Ko-Un Roshi of the Sanbo Kyodan school of Zen Buddhism. In 1982, he was authorized to teach Zen, blending elements from Soto and Rinzai traditions along with influences from Christianity and other religions, thereby creating a distinctive teaching method that reflects both his Indian heritage and Zen training. Bodhi Zendo literally means "Awakening Hall" and functions as a Sangha—a community of practitioners—open to all, regardless of religious bac...

A Spiritual Haven in the Hills: Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur- Sooraj D

Nestled in the breathtaking Palni Hills of Kodaikanal, Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur is much more than a Jesuit formation house—it is a living testament to a rich legacy of faith, ecological stewardship, educational dedication, and spiritual renewal. This remarkable institution’s origins and ongoing mission are rooted in the vision and efforts of early Jesuit missionaries, particularly Fr. Saint-Cyr, whose pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what has become a beacon of Ignatian spirituality and holistic formation. The Genesis: Fr. Saint-Cyr and the Birth of a Vision The story of Sacred Heart College begins in the mid-19th century with one man’s profound encounter with the Kodaikanal plateau. In 1852, while on a pastoral visit to Periakulam as a missionary responsible for the Dindigul, Palni, and Kumbam valleys, Fr. Saint-Cyr happened upon the steep rise of the Kodai plateau. Intrigued and inspired, he climbed through dense jungle to the plateau’s summit and immediately envisi...

A Journey through Ignatian Places: A Travelogue - Sooraj Dominic

Paris, France: A Scholarly Sojourn As I embarked on my journey through Ignatian places, my first stop was Paris, a city of scholarly pursuits and cultural marvels. Arriving in the City of Lights for my theological studies was a thrilling beginning to this pilgrimage of faith and discovery. Paris welcomed me with its enchanting streets, bustling cafes, and the timeless elegance of its architecture. My days in Paris were filled with immersion in the French language and the vibrant academic life of the city. The cobblestone streets of the Latin Quarter echoed with the footsteps of generations of scholars, and I found myself drawn to its intellectual energy. The Collège de Montaigu, where Ignatius first pursued ascetic studies, resonated with a sense of history and intellectual rigor. Moving on to the Collège Sainte-Barbe, where Ignatius studied for his master's degree, I felt a profound connection to his journey of intellectual and spiritual growth. The halls of Sainte-Barbe see...
