An Immersive Journey: My 8-Day Ignatian Retreat at Drongen Abbey- Sooraj Dominic

Introduction: Finding Solace in Tradition

In the heart of Flanders, nestled amidst the quaint village of Drongen, stands a testament to centuries of spiritual tradition: Drongen Abbey. Dating back to 1138, this historic monument has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, serving as a sanctuary for generations seeking solace and enlightenment.

Acquired by the Jesuits in 1836, the abbey transformed into a beacon of Ignatian spirituality, welcoming seekers from across Europe to partake in moments of reflection, prayer, and growth. My journey to this sacred space was not merely a physical pilgrimage but a profound spiritual odyssey that unfolded over eight days, resonating with the echoes of past devotion and the promise of inner transformation.

Arrival: A Retreat into Serenity

As I crossed the threshold of Drongen Abbey, I was enveloped by a sense of tranquility that permeated the very air. The abbey's majestic façade stood as a silent sentinel, guarding the treasures of contemplation and introspection within. The lush surroundings, adorned with gardens, ponds, and orchards, mirrored the inner landscape I yearned to explore. Each step carried me deeper into a realm where time seemed to slow, allowing space for silence to weave its gentle embrace around me.

Community and Connection: Bonding with Fellow Seekers

Joined by 25 Jesuits from diverse corners of Europe, I embarked on a journey of shared exploration and communal growth. Within the hallowed halls of Drongen Abbey, borders dissolved, and distinctions faded as we became pilgrims on a common path. Our conversations, enriched by cultural nuances and personal insights, served as threads weaving a tapestry of unity amidst diversity. Together, we formed a microcosm of the global Ignatian community, united by a shared commitment to spiritual discernment and service.

The Rhythm of Retreat: Embracing Silence and Contemplation

In the sanctuary of Drongen Abbey, time followed a different cadence, marked not by the relentless ticking of a clock but by the gentle pulse of prayer and meditation. Each day unfolded with a seamless rhythm, punctuated by moments of communal worship, individual reflection, and shared meals imbued with sacred simplicity. The structured schedule, meticulously crafted to nurture both body and soul, provided a framework for inner exploration while leaving ample room for spontaneous encounters with grace.

Encounters with Grace: Moments of Divine Revelation

Amidst the quietude of Drongen Abbey, I encountered moments of divine revelation that illuminated the path of my spiritual journey. Whether in the silent contemplation of nature's beauty or the whispered prayers echoing through the chapel's vaulted ceilings, I felt the presence of the divine enfolding me in its embrace. Each encounter, fleeting yet profound, served as a reminder of the sacred interconnectedness woven into the fabric of existence, inviting me to surrender to the mystery that lay beyond comprehension.

Guided by Ignatian Wisdom: Navigating the Inner Landscape

Guided by the wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, navigating the labyrinthine corridors of my inner landscape with courage and humility. Through the practice of Ignatian spirituality, I learned to discern the movements of the spirit within me, distinguishing between the gentle stirrings of grace and the discordant echoes of ego. In the Ignatian tradition of the Examen, I found a tool for daily reflection, a compass guiding me towards a deeper understanding of my truest desires and highest aspirations.

Embracing Transformation: Seeds of Growth Take Root

As the days unfolded, I felt the seeds of transformation take root within me, nourished by the fertile soil of prayer, reflection, and community. The insights gleaned from moments of solitude and shared discernment germinated into a newfound clarity of purpose, infusing my life with renewed meaning and vitality. Like the orchards blooming within the abbey's grounds, I felt myself blossoming, unfurling my petals towards the light of divine grace, embracing the fullness of my being with open arms.

Conclusion: A Journey Beyond Borders

As my time at Drongen Abbey drew to a close, I carried with me the gifts of insight and renewal bestowed upon me by this sacred sanctuary. The bonds forged with fellow seekers transcended geographical boundaries, weaving a tapestry of connection that stretched across continents and cultures.

In the embrace of Ignatian spirituality, I found not only solace but also inspiration, a guiding light illuminating the path towards a more authentic and purposeful existence. Though my physical journey may have ended, the echoes of Drongen Abbey continue to resonate within me, reminding me that the truest pilgrimage is the journey towards the heart of the divine, a journey without end.

Awakening in the Hills: My Transformative Journey at Bodhi Zendo, Kodaikanal - Sooraj D

Bodhi Zendo, nestled in the serene Perumalmalai near Kodaikanal, stands as a unique beacon of Zen meditation in South India. Founded in 1996 by Fr. AMA Samy, the first Indian Zen master and a Jesuit priest, the center represents a remarkable confluence of spiritual traditions. Fr. AMA Samy's journey to establishing Bodhi Zendo was deeply shaped by his life experiences and spiritual quests. His search for spiritual depth led him to Hindu ashrams, Buddhist meditation centers, and eventually to Japan, where he trained under Yamada Ko-Un Roshi of the Sanbo Kyodan school of Zen Buddhism. In 1982, he was authorized to teach Zen, blending elements from Soto and Rinzai traditions along with influences from Christianity and other religions, thereby creating a distinctive teaching method that reflects both his Indian heritage and Zen training. Bodhi Zendo literally means "Awakening Hall" and functions as a Sangha—a community of practitioners—open to all, regardless of religious bac...

A Spiritual Haven in the Hills: Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur- Sooraj D

Nestled in the breathtaking Palni Hills of Kodaikanal, Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur is much more than a Jesuit formation house—it is a living testament to a rich legacy of faith, ecological stewardship, educational dedication, and spiritual renewal. This remarkable institution’s origins and ongoing mission are rooted in the vision and efforts of early Jesuit missionaries, particularly Fr. Saint-Cyr, whose pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what has become a beacon of Ignatian spirituality and holistic formation. The Genesis: Fr. Saint-Cyr and the Birth of a Vision The story of Sacred Heart College begins in the mid-19th century with one man’s profound encounter with the Kodaikanal plateau. In 1852, while on a pastoral visit to Periakulam as a missionary responsible for the Dindigul, Palni, and Kumbam valleys, Fr. Saint-Cyr happened upon the steep rise of the Kodai plateau. Intrigued and inspired, he climbed through dense jungle to the plateau’s summit and immediately envisi...

A Journey through Ignatian Places: A Travelogue - Sooraj Dominic

Paris, France: A Scholarly Sojourn As I embarked on my journey through Ignatian places, my first stop was Paris, a city of scholarly pursuits and cultural marvels. Arriving in the City of Lights for my theological studies was a thrilling beginning to this pilgrimage of faith and discovery. Paris welcomed me with its enchanting streets, bustling cafes, and the timeless elegance of its architecture. My days in Paris were filled with immersion in the French language and the vibrant academic life of the city. The cobblestone streets of the Latin Quarter echoed with the footsteps of generations of scholars, and I found myself drawn to its intellectual energy. The Collège de Montaigu, where Ignatius first pursued ascetic studies, resonated with a sense of history and intellectual rigor. Moving on to the Collège Sainte-Barbe, where Ignatius studied for his master's degree, I felt a profound connection to his journey of intellectual and spiritual growth. The halls of Sainte-Barbe see...
